Charlotte Pilcher & Vanessa Gillingham

Sweethearts of the Rodeo is a London based luxury boot brand founded by Charlotte Pilcher and Vanessa Gillingham, former fashion Editors at British VOGUE. Charlotte and Vanessa have both worked as fashion consultants to major fashion brands and have a combined wealth of private clients and celebrities they have styled. Charlotte also contributed for many other fashion magazines, notably she was the Fashion Editor on the Diana, Princess of Wales infamous Vanity Fair shoot. Vanessa held the position of Fashion Director of British Glamour magazine for ten years, from its inception. They bonded in the VOGUE fashion room, and time and time again discussed their inability to find the perfect boot, that would fit in to every part of their lives. Effortlessly stylish, exquisitely made, lastalifetime boots, harder to take off than put on.

Even with their knowledge, experience and global reach, they couldn’t find the boots they wanted to wear: everyday fabulous, to dress up or dress down, that you throw on and love, day and night. If men can find a style and fit they love and go back to time and again, they thought why can’t we? Androgyny is sexy. Attitude is timeless. So using their unique position and years of experience working at the heart of the fashion industry, the time had come to create their own dream boots.

Style is distinct from fashion. In a market place crowded with seasonal ‘must-haves’, Charlotte and Vanessa were looking to combine understated cool with the perfect detailing and the finest manufacturing in Italy, that fit like a glove and feel great on.

Sweethearts of the Rodeo boots are not to be found in the saturated homogeny of the mainstream, and not about being part of the changing tides of fashion. These boots have an understated, insouciant, timeless attitude. Put them on and treasure them forever. The styles are refined, yet easy. An elevation of taste and a distillation of cool. These boots are made to walk many lifetimes. But first they belong to you.

The tradition of fine handmade boot-making lives on in Tuscany, where these boots are made. This meticulously thought through collection consists of seven distinct boots in softest supple leathers, unlined leather, raw cut leather, with beautiful bespoke hardware, and are handcrafted by skilled Italian craftsmen.

Everywhere you go, your Sweethearts of the Rodeo boots go too.

The Factory

Our boots are lovingly handcrafted in a family-owned factory in Tuscany, an area known for the excellence of its craftspeople since medieval times. The family’s shoemaking pedigree stretches back four generations to 1895. The owner currently works alongside his son and daughter, using only the highest quality leathers and hardware. We found that their obsession with craft and detail chimed perfectly with our own.

The owner always wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps. When he was a very young child he remembers going to the family garden with a shoe and a spade, to plant the ‘seed of a shoe’ in hopes of contributing to the family business. Today he is described as an old-fashioned entrepreneur, striking the perfect balance between tradition and innovation.

Along with the skills they’ve inherited, the family possess a deep understanding of every detail of the process that goes into making outstanding footwear. As the owner puts it, “Luxury has become our family label, with the love and care that makes our products sing, and a dedication that animates every corner of the factory, and tells its tale in every single process, from developing the concept to the final boot”.

Here in this corner of Tuscany we found the exacting standards, quality and passion that we were searching for.
